On the 21st day of November, 2019, the Yukon Legislative Assembly passed a bill to transform Yukon College to a university. This move will make Yukon University the first university in the northern part of the country. It will also become the first educational institution in the territories to offer a degree in its own brand name. The university will be offering trades programs, adult basic education and academic upgrading, making quality education less farther from home for northerners.

The university will officially be launched on May 9th, 2020, with a convocation ceremony for its first graduates.

The institution is devising on the creation of new academic plans instructed by the new legislation. "Our vision is to be that first northern university that focuses on Indigenous governance that focuses on sustainable natural resources, that focuses on northern climate and everything that flows from that," said Tom Ullyett, Yukon College Board of Governors chair. The university will also be reporting annually to both Yukon First Nations and the Government of Yukon on the operations of the university.

If you’re from the North or wish to go to a northern university, save this date “May 9th, 2020” as Yukon College will be celebrating the launch of Canada’s first northern university- Yukon University.
